Program Reviews

"According to this program, every minute of every day, someone in this country becomes a victim of identity theft (America’s fastest growing white color crime). While it’s impossible to protect yourself 100%, steps can be taken to minimize one’s chances of becoming the next subject for a Citibank commercial. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information-such as a credit card or social security number-to commit a crime in your name, such as the infamous charge card buying spree or borrowing your impeccable credentials to land a job. Part of the Better Business Bureau’s Consumer Education Business Series, Identity Theft reveals the myriad ways that a thief can steal identities, from obvious sources such as wallets or purses, to not so obvious avenues such as mailboxes (how many credit card offers or bank statements sit in your mailbox, unattended for hours?). Some thieves even fill out a change of address card to have someone else’s mail sent directly to then! In addition, the program touches on the obvious pitfalls of incautious purchasing over the Internet (although even smart buying won’t necessarily prevent your information from being sold to another company). While Identity Theft does a great job of making viewers aware of the dangers, the most useful part of the video is the series of step-by-step instructions on what to do if you are a victim. An excellent consumer education title, this is highly recommended. Editor’s Choice.-J. Asala"

"According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), identity theft strikes more than 700,000 Americans each year and is growing at the mind-boggling rate of 40 percent annually. To help consumers understand the problem, Identity Theft is a straightforward discussion that emphasizes the importance of vigilance and risk minimization. It first details the natire of the crime and how thieves can use a person’s identity. One surprise-approximately half of all crimes involve family members. The narrator then discusses how consumers can protect themselves and respond to suspected theft. Resources including the phone numbers and web sites of the three major credit agencies are provided; DVD users also can access this information from the menu. Identity Theft is topical and would be a useful addition to public libraries and high schools and colleges with consumer education curricula. Despite its higher cost, the DVD is recommended particularly in classroom settings as segment timings naturally break the production into two 20-minute sessions.-Courtney Deines-Jones"

"More than 9 million persons are victims of identity theft annually, according to this eye-opening production. Most of the incidents are blamed on lost or stolen driver’s licenses, credit cards, and mail. Victims relate horror stories of receiving threatening phone calls from creditors and visits by debt-collection agencies after cars, trips, and other expensive products were falsely charged on their credit cards. Better Business Bureau representatives explain how thieves obtain and use personal information, what consumers can do to protect themselves, and how stolen-identity victims should handle the situation. Includes a list of helpful telephone numbers and Web site addresses. This excellent consumer resource is packed with straightforward cautions and practical advice.
